Fit Guide
1. Perfectly Broken-In: We love a pair of jeans that are perfectly broken in. And that doesn’t mean they have to be a pair we’ve been wearing since high school. They can be a great pair like these 7 For All Mankind, which have that perfect whiskering and fading through the thighs – even a true vintage-feel button fly. In general, the distressing process has gotten so sophisticated over the years, the manufacturers do the work for you. If you don’t own one of these, or you own tons, this is the season to get a (another) pair.

When Labor Day is behind us – we know, we are mourning it, too – we mentally move into fall. And one thing that actually makes us feel good about that shift is the thought of wearing a good pair of jeans again. Really. It is. OK, we also feel better when we think about football and seeing the leaves change (but not raking them). Buying a new pair of jeans gets the ball rolling, and this season, we’ve got some great wearable trends to show you. This is not about following the latest fads – skinny jeans you can’t sit in, or extreme styling. Being stylish, to us, is about looking modern, yet timeless, and these picks reflect the best in the market.
Take a look at our overview here, and then head over to Fashion Finds, for the “ Gent’s Guide to the Top 5 Jeans Trends for Fall”, where we guide you through the best jeans in each category.

2. Straight & Slim: You may have noticed that pant legs have been getting narrower the past few seasons. The same is happening in jeans. That doesn’t mean we have to wear skinny jeans. The cuts we’re talking about are very universal, whether you opt for a slim leg that tapers at the bottom (perfect for shorter guys) or just a simple straight leg. They are not tight, just a little more polished. These slim straight legs from Joe’s Jeans is a perfect example. They have a medium dark wash that goes through a sanding treatment to get a worn-in look. The fabric has a bit of stretch to add to the comfort of the trim and modern fit.

3. Raw Denim/Selvedge: First, let’s talk about what this even means. Raw, or rigid, denim is just that – it’s dark, clean denim that basically hasn’t gone through the washing process after the fabric has been dyed. It will fade and break in as you wear them, and they are great looking. J Brand has a pair we highly recommend, in a contemporary fit and exemplary raw denim that gets so much better with age. They are perfect if you can wear jeans at the office, since they have a very polished look that work really well with sport jackets and button down shirts. Selvedge refers to the way the seams of a pair of jeans are finished. The fabric is actually woven on an old fashion loom, which creates this look of a finished self-edge (often bound in white fabric)- which explains why these types of jeans can cost a bit more. By the way, we particularly like cuffing up the hem to reveal that cool bounded finish -a small (1/2-inch is plenty) cuff - with a pair of great shoes to complete the look. A selvedge finish is a bit more "posh", so why not show it off?

4. Grey: From pale grey to charcoal/distressed black, we are into the very masculine look of a grey pair of jeans. Depending on the wash, it’s a great option for a night out, a casual day, or a less formal day at the office. In the lighter end of this hue, these Citizens of Humanity have slight whiskering for a washed out look that is a super cool casual alternative to the basic blue denims. This is Citizens’ most popular fit, since it’s contemporary but not overly slim – just modern and great looking.

5. Black: Keeping with the idea of “color” in our jeans, black is an important choice this season. This trend picks up where the Grey Trend ends…from a washed, distressed black to a deep saturated black, there is a lot of versatility here. Black works really well in twill and corduroy, too – a very dapper option for after 5. AG Jeans has one of our favorite versions in the softest brushed cotton that has a bit of stretch to it. The fabric not only feels wonderful, it takes color really well, so the black is saturated and deep. A universally flattering fit with a bit of an easier waist and leg, these will look great with a sweater or sport jacket for a night out.
