Classic Fit Three-Piece Check Suit
Canali
Sold by: Nordstrom
Fit Guide
One of our favorite suits of the season, this subtle navy check 3-piece suit from Canali will make you one of the most dapper guys in the office, or wherever you are going. We like the rich texture and subtle colors of the Italian fabric. The classic fit and craftsmanship of Canali are impeccable. The vest makes a debonair statement but the suit looks just as great without the vest, too. You can wear it with a with a white or blue shirt, or pump up the style a bit with this Robert Talbott blue pattern shirt and foulard tie.

Wearing a suit or sport coat used to be a standard for men, for everything from work to going to a baseball game. And then, with advances in fabric technology, cultural changes – hello, polyester and disco – and economic shifts, men started wearing more casual clothes. Denim crept into our wardrobes. Many offices, especially in the early 2000’s took on a “business casual” environment where chinos, jeans, button down shirts, and sweaters became a new standard. Once the pendulum swings one way, though, it’s bound to swing back. We’re settling into a time now when suits and sport coats are making a strong comeback in our wardrobes – and they’ve really evolved to be so much more versatile than our structured suits from the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. Sure, suits will also be the quintessential polished look for work or a dressier event. 3-piece suits (with a vest), double breasted options, and slim silhouettes are stronger than ever. But they are also being worn with more of a casual, sportswear flare – layering with vests and outerwear, so it’s not just about your dress shirt and tie. And the same is certainly true for sport coats. Checks and plaids give sport coats a lot more interest, and silhouettes with a less structured shoulder create a more casual look for your jackets. All of these details make our coats great layering pieces over sweaters and sport shirts.

This wool charcoal plaid suit from Brooks Brothers is in the Fitzgerald model – a great fit for most gents - with a trimmer coat and pants, in a more contemporary silhouette. The luxurious fabric is woven in Italy. This is a great day time business suit that effortlessly moves to evening business events. Wear it with a blue shirt and this wider spaced striped tie.

A grey stripe suit is a staple in a guy’s work wardrobe – and if it isn’t yet for you, it should be. This all wool bead stripe from Peter Millar has a classic feel, but with a modern look in its narrower lapels and slightly trimmer trouser legs. The suit is still a classic, just updated and comfortable. For your serious business meetings, wear with a white spread collar shirt and blue foulard tie.

This contemporary fitting (but not at all skinny) navy blazer from Billy Reid has a really cool subtle dark charcoal plaid pattern. It has even cooler elbow patches made of the same plaid, just at a slightly different angle (click through the “shop it” button to see what we mean). The stylish edge and subtlety make this blazer so versatile for tons of uses. Wear it with charcoal grey wool pants, shirt and tie for a more formal business or event. For a more casual look, go with dark blue or black wash jeans. This is one amazing jacket. (Note: East Dane has styled their image to create a trimmer look to this jacket, which is why we’re showing you a more accurate image from Billy Reid’s website.)

The great thing about patterned sport coats is how easily we can dress them up or down. This Hugo Boss can do just that with its bolder check pattern, but still in sophisticated, easy colors of blue and tan. The faux suede elbow patches add a sporty touch when you wear it casually with jeans, or a sophisticated finish with your medium grey or tan dress trousers. This jacket is in Boss’ “general fit”, so it looks great on most of us gents.
