While it’s not officially winter yet, it is officially getting cold. And that means it’s outerwear season. Since our hometown is Chicago, it certainly won’t come as a surprise to hear that this is a category of clothes that we know a little something about. Our “winter” coats are usually on full display well before – and after – the official days of winter have come and gone. Having the right coat or jacket is not only a functional necessity, it creates your first impression when you go anywhere. And you only get one chance to make one of those, right? Make sure your outerwear piece is not only functional but looks great. This season, there are a lot of great options to choose from. Quilting continues to be important, especially in down vests, which are a great weekend look. Double breasted options and styles with less structure, like raglan sleeves, give our dressier coats some interesting twists. And of course, leather remains important in everything from biker to bomber jackets. Whatever your need, let’s get into our finds – they are some of the best in the market.
Take a look at a few of our favorites here, and then head over to Fashion Finds, to see more of our favorites for work, after 5, and casual dressing.

From Canada Goose, this arctic parka is the ultimate in cold weather wear. We mean it. The jacket is filled with 100% white duck down and is designed to keep you warm at around 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If this winter is anything like the last one, that is going to be a life saver on those mornings when you are shoveling out the car. This coat has all the cold weather details covered - the pockets are fleece lined, the hood is removable with a natural coyote fur trim, and it has a zipper AND button closure to keep that wind out. The fit is trim and modern, so we suggest sizing up if you are looking for a looser fit. The military green color is so modern and a great alternative to basic black that still looks great with jeans, khaki’s, or corduroys. Canada Goose is one of the world’s leaders in developing extreme weather gear – you will not be disappointed.

From BOSS Hugo Boss, this beautiful wool and cashmere notch collar top coat goes over your best suit or your favorite jeans with ease. The color is so great. You don’t often find a coat in such a rich shade of brown, but the weighty fabric really shows it off. It looks so dapper with olive, brown and dark navy suits. On the casual side, it is great with jeans or khaki’s and takes your look up a notch.

We freely admit our bias toward authentic English wool fabrics. They are rich in color and texture and wear forever. This J.Crew brown/olive herringbone coat with Thinsulate® from England’s Abraham Moon mill is a wonderful update to the classic topcoat. It’s a shorter length, but still covers a suit coat. The lapels are narrower, and the collar notch is smaller and higher on the collar. The rich herringbone fabric looks as good with a grey flannel suit as it does with jeans and a sweatshirt. The Thinsulate® lining helps to keep you warm when the temperature drops, but is thin, so it doesn’t create any extra bulk. The fit is contemporary so size up if you want a looser fit.

The combination of a sleek bomber style and a down puffer jacket is just so cool. It’s from Han Kjobenhavn, a Danish company committed to clean lines and quality outerwear that is suited for the Scandinavian climate. And, boy do they deliver with this one. The navy color works well with your dark wash blue, grey and black jeans or tan and olive khaki’s. But it doesn’t only look good. It’s warm and functional with knit cuffs and collar and zip close pockets – all designed to help keep the wind out and style up. We also like the no logo, simple design. The fit is contemporary, so it creates a trim look – no stay Puft Marshmallow Man here.

This military inspired navy trench coat from J. Crew will protect you from the autumn rain and chill. The high tech cotton blend fabric is from Italy’s Olmetex mill which is known for its weather resistant outerwear fabrics. We like its versatility and clean, yet interesting design, with authentic epaulets and sleeve straps. Wear it to work or on the weekends with jeans or khaki’s.

If this pea coat style is good enough for James Bond, it’s good enough for us. Billy Reid created this all-wool version, using the same body Daniel Craig wore – and we thank them for that, since it’s great for fall into winter. It works with dressy wool trousers as easily as it does with broken-in jeans and boots. While pea coats have always been a classic staple, they have returned as a fashion item, and that can be seen in this coat's leather collar and pocket flap details. The fit is contemporary, and the charcoal grey (shown) and dark heathered green work with everything.
