We’re going to guess that if we took a look in your closets, we’d find a few – probably a lot – of button-down shirts hanging there. Call them what you like – a woven shirt (because the fabric is woven on a loom, not knit like a t-shirt), a button-down, a button-up, a dress or sport shirt – they’ve got a collar, they’ve got buttons down the front, and they are the glue of our wardrobes. Whether you are wearing one with a suit or sport coat for work, a sweater and stylish trousers for a night out, or casually with a t-shirt and jeans, you’re probably wearing a few every week. So, it’s important to keep them updated. Whether it’s just time to replace some of those classics or you need a little infusion of style with the great plaids and flannels of the season, there’s always a reason to pick up a few more (at least, in our humble opinions).
Take a look at a few of our favorites here, and then head over to Fashion Finds, to see our top pick for work, after 5, and casual dressing.

From Ike Behar, this Italian made lavender and navy Tattersall pattern dress shirt is a sophisticated option to wear with your grey and navy suits or blazers. With a classic fit and silk-like feel to the Italian cotton fabric, this is worth every penny and will wear well over the years. A solid dark navy silk knit tie completes the polished look.

This blue/green plaid from Zachary Prell can be worn for a sophisticated look with dark grey wool pants or with dark wash jeans for a more casual look – we are always fans of shirts with versatility. For this one, the key is the deep color and medium-size plaid that is not too bold, nor too simple. The fit is modern with a little less fullness in the chest and waist, which looks great on most gents. But what you’ll enjoy most is the fabric, as Zackary Prell uses the finest European mills. This also ensures that his shirts will wear and wash well.

An all cotton navy gingham spread collar shirt is one of those “basics” that is handsome and very much in style today. Wear it with a grey or navy suit and solid or spaced tie. (Tip: “Spaced” is just a tie that has a spaced out pattern, so the ground color is clearly visible.) Oh, but the uses for this shirt don’t end there. Wear it under your solid sweaters with trousers. Wear it on its own with khaki’s or jeans. Ledbury is using Thomas Mason fabric, one of our favorite mills, so the quality is top notch. It is available in a classic and a trim fit, so there’s one for everyone.

Dark checks are an important look this season. Hugo Boss’ interpretation in a deep blue combination looks great with jeans. But it’s really dapper and updated with a navy suit or sport coat. The fit is Boss’ regular fit, which is contemporary and works on most gents.

This Gitman Vintage washed cotton shirt is one of our favorites to wear with jeans. It’s trim fit and rounded shirttail look great un-tucked. Once you click through the “shop it” button, you’ll see how amazing the color combination of blue, olive, cream, and deep red is. It’s very retro in feel – which is what this line from Gitman Bros. is all about – taking inspiration from vintage fabrics.

The plaid color combination and incredibly soft broken-in flannel of this J. McLaughlin shirt completely won us over. It’s exactly what you’ll find many of us wearing on any weekend day. It’s perfect with jeans and layers well under a blue or grey pullover, too. The fit is classic so we can all enjoy this one. It comes in a blue/green/grey combination, as well - you may need more than one.
