A woven shirt – otherwise known as a button-down shirt, a button-up shirt, dress shirt, or sport shirt - is a staple in most men’s closets. There are always great updates each season to give you a good reason to buy a few more. This season is all about saturated color, bold pattern, and cotton and linen materials. Spread collars also update the shirt, creating a modern silhouette.
In case you’re wondering, a woven fabric is one where the threads are actually woven together on a loom, creating a durable piece of fabric – perfect for this kind of shirt. This is in contrast to a knit fabric (like a T-shirt), which is softer because its fibers are actually looped together – the way your grandmother may have made you a sweater.

From Vince, this classic white cotton poplin shirt works double duty. It may not be the first shirt to catch your eye, but with it’s slimmer modern silhouette, it is a sure thing to spruce up all of your casual summer shorts, cotton pants, and jeans. And it easily pairs with any cotton suit - we like this one - or sport coat for a less formal look.

This Robert Talbott striped, spread collar dress shirt is a classic for your navy and grey suits, and your tried-and-true blue blazer. Of course, it can work as a dressier sport shirt with gabardine or wool slacks, as well. (And sure, we can say it over and over – it works with jeans and cotton pants, too. Everything does!)

Patterns can be so personal…what draws us to one versus another? When it comes to Robert Graham, we are drawn to a lot of them. He combines patterns and colors so well, like this wine check with teal contrast in the collar and cuff. It’s such a rich combination that it will work now and into fall. Since most of our closets tend to consist of basic color pants – grey, khaki, tan, stone, dark denim – you can reach for any of them to work with this woven. We especially like it with an easy pair of linen pants in the summer. Great for a Saturday night out.

From Thomas Dean, a classic modern check in a deep, saturated blue to go with your dark wash jeans for a more casual Saturday night out. The sophisticated contrast details of the cuff and color are a great accent, but certainly one you can conceal if you wish. We have always liked Thomas Dean for its contrast trims, 100% pima cotton fabrics and not too full, yet not to trim fit. If you’re a timeless guy, this one’s for you.
