Fit Guide
1. Broken-in Distressing. A pair of jeans that looks like you’ve had them forever, but have a great modern fit, is always the pinnacle of casual gent style. From jeans that have just the right distressing to even a little ripping, there are plenty of ways to wear these type of jeans that aren’t too over-the-top or look like you had them in high school. The key is getting the right wash. Ensuring the creases and distress points look natural can actually be quite complicated, requiring hand sanding and multiple wash processes. The medium light wash and soft whiskering of these AG jeans are broken-in perfection. While distressed, there are no rips or holes, so they give off that effortless casual style, that is still nice enough for casual dinner or brunch. The fabric is a very high-quality Japanese cotton that has lyocell in it, which means they are incredibly soft. The Protégé model is an easier fit in the seat and thigh with a straight leg, so it’s comfortable, yet modern – a great look for any gent.

When the seasons starts to change, it’s time to take a look at your closet. Sure, you may have plenty of things from past seasons that you love. And that’s great. But it’s also important to do a little refresh, bringing in some newness to keep you looking modern and updated. And your jeans are one key place to do that. Jeans are not only acceptable in almost every situation these days, from offices to dinners to a casual weekend outing, they pack a lot of style punch with little effort. Everyone loves a gent in a good-looking pair of jeans, right?
Straight and slim jeans are still the style of choice, and they look fresh in a wide range of washes and colors, from dark raw denim to white. Jeans are also translated in colorful twill fabrics, while denim (or chambray, which is a lighter weight fabric woven with white threads to create a lighter color) works its way in to our shirts and shorts in dapper new ways. Remember, we’re not reinventing the wheel, just keeping our looks modern and updated. Let’s get into it.

2. Raw/Selvedge Denim. This is a fabric we talked about this past season, and we are happy to report, it’s as strong as ever. To recap, raw denim is a dark, clean denim that basically hasn’t gone through the washing process after the fabric has been dyed. It will fade and break in to perfection as you wear them. And selvedge refers to the way the seams of a pair of jeans are finished on an old fashioned loom (often bound in white fabric). These finishing touches can make these types of jeans a bit more expensive…and worth every penny. This pair from J Brand is raw denim at its finest. The fabric will soften, fade and weather the more you wear and wash it. And you’ll have lots of opportunities to wear them, since they dress up any sporty outfit with ease. This model, Kane, has a straight leg with trimmer seat and thigh. While not a classic fit, it is definitely not too trim for classic gents who need to update their jeans wardrobe.

3. White. When white is THE color of the season, white jeans are an easy way to give your wardrobe an update. From pure white to pale beige, they are not just for sailing. Don’t shy away from this one, gents. For the warmer months, we treat white jeans the same way we treat dark denim – they go with everything, can be dressed up and down with ease, and are a wardrobe staple. A great fitting pair of white jeans is so sharp with a pop of color in your shirt. Not surprisingly, Tommy Bahama, known for his beachy aesthetic and classic fit, has a great pair. They have a touch of stretch, adding to the already comfortable style. Everything in your closet, from bold color to soft neutral will look great. Add a white sneaker to finish the look.

4. Color. In spring, twill becomes a great alternative to some of the heavier denim weights & takes color beautifully. Faded colors are a fresh addition to the world of men’s pants, and is an easy way to step into wearing some color in your pants without feeling too bold. This faded barn red (called scoria) from Joe’s is a great example. In Joe’s most popular Brixton style, it is a modern fit (we find it to be an appropriately updated fit that is trim, but far from skinny), that is polished and rugged at the same time – and won’t look like you’re trying too hard, especially with a white polo, a white t-shirt or a white button up.

5. Not Just Jeans. Playing up the whole Americana feel of the season, as we said, denim is not just in jeans. From dark denim to chambray (often blue, a fabric woven with white threads to create a lighter weight and color) shirts, shorts, and even ties offer some cool options that can easily dress you up or down. A denim shirt is one of the most useful and on-trend layering piece for spring. J.Crew’s distressed Japanese denim has a great faded look that makes it one of our top picks. The open patch pockets and smaller buttons are classic work shirt details that make this a timeless piece, instead of an overly trendy one. Wear it over a white, heather grey or black t-shirt with your 5-pocket twill pants, shorts or sweats to play up your easy style – any neutral or color will work.
