Fit Guide
1. Ties/Bowties. Our neckwear is getting downright dapper this season, with our ties getting slimmer and bowties becoming more and more important. For spring, pops of bold pattern and power color bring just the right amount of sartorial interest to your favorite suit, sport coat and button down shirt. This colorful silk plaid bowtie is a perfect representation. The washed blue, orange and navy colors are the perfect accent to your blue, navy, grey and dark olive suits and sport coats. And it pops a blue or grey seersucker. Barneys New York own line is made of a wonderful quality and this bow tie add a fun new dimension to your wardrobe.

Gents, we can have the best suit or jeans on, but if our shoes or tie look dated, well, it can really ruin the whole thing. Just like lapel styles change, or pant legs get more tapered, there are subtle – and not so subtle – changes to our accessories that we need to incorporate in to our wardrobes to stay looking modern and appropriate.
With the simple change of a shoe or the right tie, a timeless button down and pair of jeans get an instant makeover. So, what do you need for this season? This week, we’re breaking down the 5 key accessory categories –ties/bowties, shoes, bags, belts, and those final touches in our socks and even tech accessories.
When you are done here, head over to Fashion Finds for the “Top 20 Must-Have Spring Accessories for the Gents”, where we highlight our top picks of each category to get you through the season in style. If you like something, just click on the “Shop It” button to buy it from our suggested retailer. And let us know what you think through the comments section below and on social media.

2. Shoes. Women often say that a bad pair of shoes can ruin that first impression of an otherwise well-dressed gent. We don’t want that, do we? In terms of materials, coated canvas and mixed fabrications update our shoes for a day at the office or a night out. One of our favorite trends that continue to be important is a lighter color sole on our shoes. A contrasting white rubber or tan leather sole is so modern, without feeling trendy. As for shoe styles, there are a couple of must-haves to keep in rotation. With the importance of athletic inspiration, sneakers remain an important shoe option, in styles that are even better suited for a casual day of brunch and fun than a hardcore workout at the gym. And this extends to slip-on styles, both in sneaker options for a casual day, and dressier options like loafers –even with tassels. Donald J Pliner has one of our favorite interpretations blending a lot of the current trends – a white sole and trim, and a slip-on silhouette - to update a classic tasseled loafer to the modern day. The neutral stone color goes with everything, so wear it with jeans, shorts and khaki’s for a smart casual look.

3. Bags. When you are walking in to the office or an off-site meeting, your bag is just as important as the clothes you are wearing. And this season offers a lot of options. From totes with a more relaxed feel to structured updated briefcase styles, functionality and great materials are the name of the game. Jack Spade’s Waxwear canvas modern briefcase is one of the best. The fine cotton canvas is made in the same fashion as sailcloth has been made for centuries, so when they say it’s water and abrasion resistant, they are not fooling around. And with a structured and sporty style that has an interior padded laptop sleeve and pockets for all your other good stuff, it’s a style worth the investment. It will just get better with time. On the other side of things, more casual styles like messenger bags and backpacks can also go to the office – as well as to the park, or your favorite coffee shop. And, just like in shoes, athletic inspiration gave designers the opportunity to put some thought into our gym and overnight bags, so they are looking better than ever – without losing any function.

4. Belts. If you’re like most gents, you might not think about your belt…until it’s time to put it on. But it’s a key piece to bring that finishing touch to your outfit, and it shouldn’t be overlooked. The right belt pulls everything together and can be just what is needed to create a stylish, polished look. The same is true for a casual look. J.Crew’s burnished leather belt is that perfect mid-brown with a tarnished nickel buckle that gives a rugged edge to your favorite jeans and khaki’s. The 1” width is a modern update and the fine Italian-made quality will just get better over time.

5. Bonus Accessories. Once you’ve got all the big guns covered, there are still little details – the pocket square, or even the socks – that are the finishing touches of style. It’s these nuanced elements that might not be noticed, but they will subtly bring your whole look together. And something will feel like it’s missing if you don’t have that little pop of bold spring pattern or color. These Paul Smith striped socks are a perfect example, giving you the opportunity to go bold with all your timeless grey, tan, blue and white casual wear or dress wear (yes, they’re a great way to add a little flare even in a conservative office). Our tech gadgets have become such an integral part of our everyday lives, accessories that enhance our gadgets can be good-looking, too.
