Fit Guide
Tricky Statement: Dressing Up Sweatpants. We’ve been talking about the athleisure trend for a while now, but it can be hard to figure out how to incorporate that comfortable lounging style into a look that you feel confident leaving the house in. After keeping your sweats relegated to the couch or the gym, it’s not always easy to look at yourself and know if you can really pull this off. You can. Ensure your sweats have some fine finish details, like these French terry fleece ones from Michael Kors. The zip slash pockets in the front and patch pockets in the back, with a more structured looking drawstring waistband give these sweats the look of a more structured pair of pants, so you can treat them like your jeans or any casual pants. By wearing them with a cardigan, as shown (that can also be purchased through the ‘shop it’ button, just further down on the page), or a casual button down – even a polo- you’ve got a look you can step out in, in style.

With today’s fashions of merging casual and dressy style, it can be confusing to know what looks “right” together. Magazines, fashion segments on the news, and online imagery can only make matters worse and turn you off the whole thing altogether with an over-the-top “fashion guy” angle that just isn’t you. At Mark Shale, we love to find new styles but also think it’s essential to be able to incorporate them in to your existing wardrobes. We always want you to look modern, updated and appropriate, and feel like you are looking current without that “trying-too-hard” feel. So this week, we’re blending these 2 ideas by taking some of the current trends that may seem out of your normal comfort zone and putting them into looks that will (hopefully) change your mind.
Take a look at a few style statements we’ll be dissecting and then head over to “5 Outfits to Simplify Tricky Style Mixing (& Make Them Your Own)” to see complete outfits incorporating these seemingly tricky concepts into completely modern and appropriate outfits for the Mark Shale gent that won’t seem tricky at all. If you like something, just click on the “Shop It” button to buy it from our suggested retailer. And let us know what you think through the comments section below and on social media.

Tricky Statement: Pattern Mixing. Growing up, your mom may have sent you back to your room when you wore plaid and stripes together. But now, it’s pretty cool looking. This Hugo Boss suit look is a great example of that. The micro check suit, plaid shirt and, pattern tie all work together. (They can all be purchased through the ‘shop it’ button.) How? Well, the key is to balance the size and shapes of the patterns. Matching small with large work best. The larger plaid shirt works with the smaller check of the dapper, contemporary-fitting suit. And the purple dot tie has even spacing and a neat, consistent pattern that sits well with the larger plaid shirt and the micro check suit.

Tricky Statement: A Suit Without A Tie. Well, this doesn’t sound hard, does it? Just put on your shirt and suit and leave off your tie. With the wrong shirt – or suit – this just isn’t going to look right. Tip: A white dress shirt was designed to be worn with a tie, plain and simple. A shirt that can be worn without a tie has a softer collar that lies well when the top button is not buttoned. The shirt also needs to hold up, style-wise, to the suit. This Theory look is a great example. (All can be purchased through the ‘shop it’ button.) You can see the modern collar and colors of the shirt offer a sophisticated contrast to the trim, navy suit. This solid shirt also works with the suit, since it has that soft collar construction and works with the lines of the suit, keeping the lapel width and collar proportional.

Tricky Statement: Dressing Up Those Slip-on Sneakers. The return in popularity of a great pair of slip-on shoes carries beyond those casual beach days. When done well, they look great for a nice brunch or dinner outfit, too. The dark railroad stripe pattern and the white rubber sole of these Sperry® for J.Crew canvas slip-ons allow you to dress them up. You can see how cool they look with a tan linen suit and simple t-shirt here. They look just as good with navy suits and sport coats. And they look great with casual pants like khaki’s or jeans. By pairing them with a button up shirt and zip cardigan, these comfortable sneakers become an elevate version of basic sneakers. Of course, they are still casual enough to wear with shorts, so you really get a bang for your buck.

Tricky Statement: Shorts With A Sport Jacket. OK, Gents, we’re not talking about your look from college when throwing on a sport coat with your shorts was your version of cocktail attire. This is actually a look you can pull off now – if you do it right. Shorts are a Summer staple and have become accepted at places besides the beach and the golf course. But that doesn’t mean throwing on shorts and a t-shirt is acceptable for a restaurant. The right shorts, like these tan Polo ones are neutral and polished looking. So, they can be paired with a blazer. This Polo blazer works because it is sleek and in a crisp, navy cotton that is not too dressy. (If your size is already sold out in the navy, the black is just and versatile - both are on sale.) Then, it’s all in how it’s accessorized. A patterned shirt and cotton cable knit sweater keep up the sartorial edge. Your shoes are just as important. A slip-on or sneaker is a good casual choice. And you can dress this look up with loafers or suede oxfords.
