You probably don’t go out shopping for the ‘It’ print of the season, but patterns have a way of creeping into your closet. And this season, prints, especially for us gents, are more important than ever in ensuring you are looking updated and modern.
Designers are using all kinds of prints in all aspects of our wardrobes, especially shirts. Checks and plaids remain hugely important. We especially like the use of the Prince of Wales checks, which is a subtle glen plaid and a great way to bring some pattern to a suit or sport coat since it is so subtle. And there are two more trends that are really influencing our pattern choices this season. The first is color blocking and geometric patterns – variations on squares are big pattern drivers this season. They all look fresh in deep Fall colors that create a masculine look and a smart update to a basic shirt. The second is ‘70’s influences. Now, gents, we’re not saying we think you should go get a wide-collared polyester shirt, but things like paisley and graphic prints look really smart. Pattern is so important, there are even some great options in knits and sweaters.
Take a look at a few of our favorites here, and then head over to Fashion Finds, to see more of our top printed picks for work, after 5, and casual dressing. If you like something, just click on the “Shop It” button to buy it from our suggested retailer. And let us know what you think through the comments section below and on social media.

Robert Graham is known for its limited edition print shirts. The Egyptian cotton fabric used is simply the best – as are the designs. That’s why we know so many gents that collect them. Ensuring you add this very special blue pattern to your wardrobe (whether it’s you first or 10th Robert Graham shirt) just makes good sense. The classic fit looks great with black or dark wash jeans, in its indigo-inspired colors. The iconic cuff and collar contrasts make this exclusive shirt a piece you’ll reach for over and over, so it’s worth every penny.

Polo Ralph Lauren uses a soft dark blue glen plaid pattern to create one of our favorite sport coats of the upcoming Fall season. This high-quality English wool and cashmere jacket can be dressed up or dressed down for any occasion, and the contemporary fit ensures a sleek, updated look. Wear it with charcoal grey wool pants, a white dress shirt and a solid knit tie for a dressed up look. Dark wash jeans and a button up blue chambray shirt make it just right for a more casual day. When the weather turns cooler, a navy or charcoal sweater looks great layered underneath.

Argyle never goes out of style, and this nod to your inner preppy certainly works for the season ahead. Brooks Brothers pops in one of Fall’s favorite colors, purple, to create an updated color combination that works well under a navy sport coat or on its own with khakis or dark wash jeans. The relaxed, modern fit and lightweight wool makes it an easy office or out to dinner option.

With the season’s focus on glen plaids, this Billy Reid shirt exemplifies what we love about this pattern, using a rust windowpane over the classic blue glen plaid to really capture the trend in a timeless way. The washed feel of the cotton fabric just adds to the allure – it’s so comfortable and has the perfect casual look that works with jeans or twill pants. The button down collar makes it an easy layer under a navy or grey sweater, too.

When you want to update some of the staples you already have in your wardrobe, a pocket square in a Prince of Wales plaid will have you looking up-to-date in no time. If you haven’t bought anything from Todd Snyder’s line yet, this linen pocket square will dip your toe in the water, and then you’ll want to dive right in. The line describes itself as, “inspired by Savile Row craftsmanship, military tailoring, and a distinct New York sensibility”. And you’ll see how true that is. This simple blue, grey and white square is a natural for your grey and blue suits and sport coats. Tip: If you are wearing your suit without a tie, a pocket square is an easy replacement for that missing pop of color.
