Mark Shale Through the Years

Since 1929, when we opened our doors as the Al Baskin Store, the fashion industry has seen a lot of changes…and so have we. The store was initially named for our founder and later changed to Mark Shale, after Al’s 2 children. The Baskin family still owns Mark Shale today. Check out some of our favorite memorabilia.

The 1970's

In the 1970s, Mark Shale continued to look for ways to make shopping interesting and fun.

In 1972, we opened a Mark Shale store with a completely radical design. Realizing the need for an easier way to quickly remerchandise with fashion's constant changes, we became one of the first retailers to create a store that was viewed as a stage. Using all movable fixtures, this earned us multiple international design awards.

In 1977, we implemented one of the first inventory information systems to keep track of what items were sold and which sizes we had in stock in order to better serve our customers. This is now standard practice in all stores today.
