7 For All Mankind

Fit Guide
1. Flare/Bootcut: A flare leg is really just an exaggerated bootcut, and it’s super flattering. Just be sure you pick the correct rise for your body type. In general, this style looks best in darker washes that aren’t too distressed – it creates the cleanest lines. If you’re tall and/or have a flatter stomach, a higher rise will look fabulous in a flare style. Very ‘70’s retro with a tucked in silky blouse, fitted blazer and heels for a casual day at the office or out to dinner. For the rest of us, especially if you are bigger busted, go with a medium rise. But you can still wear this style in the same way. Our absolute favorite interpretation of the flare, for a casual Friday look, is this 7 For All Mankind pair. The trouser styling with slanted hip pockets and a wider waistband is an amazing fit. They really make you look a size smaller. They run a little easier than most 7 For All Mankind styles , so if you are between sizes, you may want to size down (hey, these jeans really make you feel good about yourself). For these styles, we definitely recommend a heel (from skinny to a wedge) to really elongate the leg and highlight the flare. A pointier toe looks great. Oh, and petite gals…taking off a few inches will generally still retain the look, but if you are lobbing off 5+”, you’re going to lose the flare, so look for a petite version. This style looks best when the hem just skims the ground, so keep this in mind if you get any tailoring done.

Shattering the Myth: Jeans Shopping No Longer Worse than Bathing Suit Shopping

Did Labor Day weekend really just happen? That means that summer is over, doesn’t it? [Insert big “sigh” here.] At least we have our memories – and fall shopping to help us get over it. Now we know that many women find jeans shopping about as difficult as bathing suit shopping. But we can get through this together. We actually love – seriously, love – jeans. Once you find a style that works for you, the usefulness of a great pair of jeans is endless – for a casual work look, to a sexy night out, or an easy day of shopping. And they look amazing with so many things. There is such versatility in brands and shapes these days, they really do flatter all body types. This is not about following the latest fads – shredded and overly distressed jeans, or extreme styling. Being stylish, to us, is about looking modern, yet timeless, and these picks reflect the best in the market.

Take a look at our overview here, and then head over to Fashion Finds, for the Ladies’ Guide to the Top 5 Jeans Trends for Fall, where we guide you through the best jeans in each category.

5. Grey: From pale grey to a deep, distressed black, we are into the tougher look of a grey pair of jeans. Depending on the wash, it’s a great option for a night out, a casual day, or a less formal day at the office. If you think you are more bottom heavy, a darker even grey will be slimming and so flattering. This color and wash look great with all the plaids out this season – and we always love it with a black sweater or a deep jeweled tone, too. These AG Jeans are one of our favorites – it’s such a good wash, really, the darker shade of steely grey that’s just slightly faded exemplifies this story perfectly. This skinny style, with an 8 ½” mid-rise and shorter leg inseam, works on most body types. The shorter length will either be slightly cropped for taller women, and just the right full length for more petite women. And the stretchy fabrication is soft and comfortable. Keep them casual with this beautiful deep red cashmere turtleneck sweater - the dolman sleeve is a nice offset to the slim fit of the jeans.

4. Straight Leg: How great to see the re-emergence of a classic straight leg option. It’s the perfect balance of a skinny and a bootcut – all the style versatility of a skinny, with a flattering break at the knee, like a bootcut. It’s a silhouette that will work for all body types, since it’s slim but with some balance at the bottom. This CJ by Cookie Johnson pair emulates that with it’s easy fit, dark even wash to flatter curvy figures, nice stretch and a bit of higher rise to create a smooth silhouette. This style looks great with any type of top – tucked in, looser and untucked like this tunic,  - you can’t go wrong. Besides the easy pairing of pumps or dressy booties, it’s perfect with all the menswear shoe styles that are everywhere this season – oxfords, loafers, classic sneakers will all look great with this cut. And so will you.

3. Boyfriend-> Girlfriend: Ah, the boyfriend jeans. No one can dispute their comfort. And they’ve evolved now, getting a little more feminine with a slimmer leg that has less volume. This new body is sometimes called the Girlfriend. Whatever it’s called, we love the evolution, as we get all the comfort and attitude of the slouchy waist of a boyfriend, with the cleaner and more flattering look of a trimmer leg. This body is our casual go-to choice. Since it is a relaxed silhouette, we favor keeping distressing to a minimum – a little can go a long way and look great. This style looks very fresh this season in darker washes. Rag & Bone has one of the best versions, with just enough whiskering to look broken in. The silhouette suits a bootie, oxford, or pair of heels, which is the great thing about this slimmer leg – it’s a much easier match to fall footwear. We like to wear a boyfriend style with a tee tucked in and a blazer  or cardigan  over it. They also look great with a slouchy sweater tucked in a bit at the front or slim-fitting sweater. We generally cuff up the hem, though with the slimmer versions, that is not necessary if you’re wearing a flat or sneaker. Tip: If you’re petite, in general, you should consider sizing down in this style.

2. Skinny: This style is not going anywhere yet. And for good reason. We know many women just don’t think they have the body type for skinny jeans. But they really can work for pretty much everyone. If you’re petite, they look amazing in a cropped version – also very current this season - with sexy heels. If you are curvier, pair a dark version with a boot and oversized sweater this season. This silhouette is so versatile, it’s become a staple in our wardrobes and a blank canvas to build a great outfit around. So whether you choose to go a little edgier with a coated pair for a night out; or, more classic with a corduroy pair, blazer and button-down; or casually modern in a broken-in wash (like this universally flattering style from J. Crew) and a solid slouchy sweater, there is truly something for everyone. We generally aren’t big fans of jeans with too much ripping, but this new way of “repairing” the rips by adding a darker denim patch? Well, that, we can get behind - especially at this price. Not only does it create a more polished finish (while still being edgy), it’s just plain practical as we get into the cooler months. If you want to try an edgier, more contemporary distressed skinny, RtA’s version is amazing, with the most subtle moto detail at the knee and patching on the waistband.
