Whether you think of outerwear as a necessary evil or an exciting way to accessorize, one thing we can agree on is that most of us cannot get through fall and winter without one. Since our hometown is Chicago, it certainly won’t surprise you to hear that we fall in the latter camp, with many of us having coats to fit every ten-degree temperature change and mood. This season, there is so much versatility in coats that it’s a great year to invest in a new one. Styles are running a wide selection in terms of color and silhouette. Neutral grays are popular, as are pop of colors and pattern ranging from bold red to plaids. Menswear inspired fabrics like tweeds and herringbones give a lot of textural interest, too. Capes and duvet/quilted coats (inspired by Norma Kamali’s iconic sleeping bag coat of the ‘70’s) have re-emerged as modernly stylish options, while trenches, bombers, and oversized, long coats remain equally important. So, whether you’re looking for a tailored trench, a warm puffer that doesn’t make you look like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, or a fashion piece for an evening out, we have found some of the best in the market.

Burberry is known for their outerwear. And it’s justified – their coats are timeless and so well made. They are investments you’ll have for years. They are most well known for their trench and quilt styles – this one delivers on both. This is an ideal “wear-now “coat that will easily get you through the next couple of months, until it gets super cold (or all winter, if you live somewhere that “super cold” just doesn’t happen). It’s an easy weekend solution, but can dress up for a night out or work, too. The double-breasted button closure is smartly designed so that the buttons are close together, which is really flattering even if you have a larger chest. There is also an asymmetrical zipper to keep the jacket lying smoothly when closed. Burberry will never leave any detail out, as you’ll see even down to the high quality buckles, epaulettes, and flap in the back. If you’ve never worn a Burberry coat before, size up if you are between sizes.

We absolutely love what Soia & Kyo, the stylish and contemporary coat manufacturer from Canada (they know about cold weather there) has done with this updated down coat. We don’t even like to call it a puffer coat, though it’s filled with 80% down feathers and has over 600 fill-power (technical outdoor coats usually fall in this range, so that is serious warmth). The black and white tweed is pure style, ideal with the importance of menswear this season. The hood is removable, it zips up and has knit cuffs for added warmth and panache.

Puffer jackets used to be purely about functionality. But over the years, they have also become stylish, thank goodness, and designers other than technical companies have gotten behind them. This Marc New York coat is a perfect example of the blending of style and functionality. The quilt design is very slimming (done at an angle to draw the eye in, with slimmer channeling on the sides), and it’s filled with warmth of down and feathers. The hood comes off, as does the fur trim, so you get 3 different looks out of this one – amazingly priced – coat.

J. Crew does some stylish and practical coats – at really competitive prices. This is one of our favorites (you’ll see a couple more throughout the week) for a lot of reasons. First of all, it comes in a large range of sizes from petite to tall, 00-16, in several beautiful colors that hit all the trends of the season (pale pink, bright red, charcoal grey) as well as the best of the classics (camel and black). Then, there’s the functionality. We can’t select coats that only look good – we are from Chicago, after all – they have to be warm. This duffle coat is made from Italian melton wool, which means that the finishing process on this high quality wool makes it very solid – the weave is virtually concealed, creating extra warmth since the air won’t get through very easily. It hits mid-thigh, has both a zipper and snap closure, and a hood. It’s heavy, but not bulky. You should be safe from Old Man Winter in there. Oh, did we mention it’s cute? Great for everyday wear – which is exactly how often you’ll want to wear it.

While we often look for longer coats for practical purposes, sometimes we want something shorter. This Trina Turk offers the feeling of a shorter jacket, but the practicality of something longer. The tulip hem offers pure lady-like style, and the back is still long enough to cover our bums to help keep us warm. It also beautifully accentuates the waist, without needing a belt. The neckline has lovely sweater-knit detail inside that is not only chic, but also soft while helping to keep you warm. Leather details complete the sophisticated look. As Nordstrom says, if you are between sizes, go up – in jackets, where you may wear heavier clothing underneath as the winter wears on, this is a good rule to adhere to when in doubt.

We all need a polished, modern-looking wool coat that is flattering and just a great go-to for everyday wear. This Elie Tahari is it. It comes in a gorgeous navy and a basic black, but we really like the olive to play up the clean, military inspiration in this piece. The modern fit works for most everyone, and we especially like the asymmetrical closure - there are hidden snaps that run all the way up the collar, so your neck won’t get any unwanted exposure to the elements (though it certainly looks great with a scarf, too).

At Mark Shale, we have always been fans of Blue Duck’s high quality shearlings. Their easier fit has made the line a universal favorite and their styling is timeless and classic. We were so excited to find this one on Bluefly. Not only is the price amazing for a real shearling coat, but this is an amazing silhouette. The wide shawl can be worn up as a hood. This comes in black, which is beautiful too, but this rich brown is stunning. Nothing beats a shearling for warmth, and style. It’s an investment coat that you’ll reach for whenever you need to leave the house on one of those truly cold days, especially if you’re dressed up.
