Ah, wedding season is upon us. What a delightful time of year...unless you don't know what to wear. Then, your heart goes from being filled with love to being filled with dread. So let's get back to that happy place with a little of our outfit guidance.
Formal. While “Black Tie” is pretty clear, (formal, floor length gown or upscale, evening suit), “Black Tie Optional” and alike, can be a little trickier. Most of those sit-down dinner affairs, perhaps at a country club or hotel, often fall into this category. There may be an outdoor component, like the ceremony or cocktail hour, but it’s generally in a setting where you can still wear skinny heels. A floor length gown is not necessary, but you can certainly wear one. In general, you’ll fit in with dressy separates, a pretty cocktail dress, or a long dress. If you’re going with a long option, we suggest keeping it simple and festive. Generally, you don’t need the same level of glitz and glamour as you do for a true Black Tie, so playing with color and pattern for the season is a great way to interpret this dress code.

Semi-formal, Dressy, Festive. You can wear a cocktail dress to cover anything that falls into these ideas. These types of weddings are often evening cocktails/passed hors d’oeuvres or dinnner, champagne/dessert, brunch, high tea, or lunch. They may be indoors, but they may also be in an upscale, outdoor setting. You can definitely have some fun with your attire, especially in the warmer weather. Play with color, especially with this season’s array of vibrant and sherbet tones. You can absolutely do a print, like floral, in a cocktail dress – just make sure the cut and fabric has a dressier feel. (Save those sundresses for the weddings we’re describing below.) Of course, black and neutral colors are absolutely appropriate – and erring on the side of caution won’t make your look any less beautiful. Just know you have options.

Dressy Casual, Casual, Beachy. This is usually reserved for day events or outdoor venues – especially destination and beach ones. If it’s a casual urban affair, a simple dress will do the trick. You can even have some fun with a jumpsuit or dressy separates, as we’re showing in Fashion Finds– just keep it modern and sophisticated. If it’s outdoors - especially somewhere like a beach, park, or casual backyard affair - you can do a pretty sundress or maxi dress. For these occasions, leave those skinny heels at home. Opt for wedges, or upscale flat sandals. This season’s chunky block heels are also a perfect choice. Playing with color and prints is absolutely allowed – even encouraged. It will play into the warm weather and fun vibe.
